Manhattanhenge

This effect is usually viewed at the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Manhattanhenge is a natural phenomenon that occurs during twice a year. This phenomenon takes place while the setting sun aligns with the east–west streets of the main street grid. During this effect, a viewer on one of the gridded east-west streets can see the sun setting over a new jersey which is directly opposite from the street, along its centerline. Manhattanhenge effect usually occurs in May 28 and July 12 or July 13. This effect is a rare and beautiful sight. The setting Sun aligns correctly with the grids of Manhattan street which can create a radiant glow of light across the Manhattan's brick and steel canyons, suddenly illuminating both the north and south sides of every cross street of borough's grid. This is an amazing view.

Firefly Squids

The scientific name of Firefly Squids is Watasenia scintillans.

This squid is the only known species of cephalopod in which evidence of color vision has been founded. The squid is equipped with special light-producing organs called photophores. These type of squids spends their day time at depths of several hundred metres, returning to the surface when night falls. They grow to a length of 7 cm. The presence of sparkling enope squid was found in the Western Pacific ocean at depths of  600–1200 feet.

Firefly squids had gets the name from the hundreds of bioluminescent photophores that cover its whole body.   Firefly squids have so many advantages with its light emitting photophores. These are flashed or emitted to warn off predators and also used to communicate with other squid. They can be used to communicate with potential mates or rivals. Firefly squid live for about one year.

They may also be used to disguise the squid's shape and confuse predators, allowing it to escape. The firefly squid is an active predator. It is believed that the squid can use their blue colour lights to attract its prey. By flashing the blue lights on and off, they can attract small fish and then pounce on them with the help of their powerful tentacles.

Interesting Facts About Firefly Squids.

1. firefly squids can see colour.

2. firefly squids have over 800 lights on their body.

3. firefly squids gather by millions or billions to mate.

4. firefly squids live for about one year.

5. firefly squids can blend in with shadows.

6. firefly squids are commercially fished in Japan.

Moonbow-Lunar Rainbow

Looks Awesome....Right?

These are Moonbow which is also known as lunar rainbow or white rainbow  or space rainbow.
The rainbow is naturally produced by light rays which are reflected by the surface of the moon and then refracting through the moist air. Moonbow are relatively faint compared to a natural rainbow because of the smaller quantity of light reflected from the surface of the moon. Moonbows are always occurred or formed at the opposite part of the sky from the direction of moon.

Moonbows are easily viewed when the moon become near to full. However as the light is usually too faint to excite the cone color receptors in human eyes, it is difficult for the human eye to distinguish the colors in a moonbow. As a result, they often appear to be white. The colors in a moonbow mainly appear in long exposure photographs.

Taj Mahal-World Wonder

Taj Mahal....One of the amazing extraordinary creation, the world ever had viewed. Taj Mahal is located in India at Agra, Uttar Pradesh state. This extreme creation was done by Mughal Empire in 1653 and standing today as a pride for whole India. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan build this monument for the memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Mumtaz Mahal's tomb lies inside Taj Mahal and this monument shows his eternal love and affection to his wife.

A strong labour force of 20000 workers accomplished this great monument in 12 years. This ancient monument clearly shows the amazing facts hidden in the Mughal architectural style and the creation is widely known as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage". Taj Mahal was constructed using materials from almost all over India and Asia and over 1,000 elephants were used to transport building materials. When Shah Jahan was put in jail by his own son, he could see the shining monument through the narrow windows of the jail. After his death, he was also buried inside the monument near to his wife's tomb.

Problems Faced.
In the Indian rebellion of 1857 against british government, the Taj Mahal was defaced by British soldiers and government officials and they cut out the precious stones and lapis lazuli from its walls. At the end of 19th century, parts of the buildings had fallen badly into disrepair.

However a great history of mughal empire lies in this monument and this place become the main heritage place for foreigners tourists.

Floating boulders of ice

looks like ice balls!!

These are floating boulders of ice lined the shores of Lake Michigan. These boulders of ice were formed with a size approximately to a basketballs. These balls are weighing in at up to 22 kilograms each.

According to the report of NASA's Earth Science Picture of the Day, these ice spheres are the winter weather phenomenon resulting from the wind and wave action along the shore. fragments of floating ice act like seeds, then with the layers upon layers of   supercooled  lake water freezing around them as the balls churn in the waves. The wind ultimately pushes the ice spheres onto the shore that is what you can see in the picture attached above.

Uyuni Salt Flats-largest salt flat in the world

It is known all over the world mainly for its vast mirror like landscape and for its unique reflective surface during the raining season, and is well popular among photographers and travelers. Uyuni Salt Flat is also one of the main attractions of tourists.

The formation of these salt flats are associated with a lake. About 30,000 to 42,000 years ago, the area was associated with a giant prehistoric lake called Lake Minchin. Lake Minchin undergoes transformation into paleolake Tauca with a depth of 140 meters. With later transformation the lake turned into Salt Flats.

These salt flat contains large amount of saturated brine. These saturated brine is enriched with large amounts of sodium, potassium, lithium and magnesium as well as borax. In these substances, the lithium got a large commercial value as it is widly use in batteries. However the extraction of these substances were stopped because of certain communal issues.
